Beijing National Aquatics Center
Beijing National Aquatics Center.
Beijing National Aquatics Center for Olympics 2008 will be one of the most dramatic and exciting venues. It is also known as ‘The Water Cube’ and has been designed by the consortium of Arup. This architecture firm PTW, the CSCEC (China State Construction and Engineering Corporation) and the CSCEC Shenzhen Design Institute (CSCEC+DESIGN) won the international design competition for the Beijing National Aquatics Center for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The ‘Water Cube’ which is another name for Beijing National Aquatics Center looks set to be ready. The concrete and the steel structure have been completed in addition to the 500 m˛ of prototype cladding being installed in April, 2006. The structural design of Beijing National Aquatics Center is based on the natural formation of soap bybbles to give a random, organic appearance. The research conducted by Weaire and Phelan (professor of Physics) in to how soap bubbles might be arranged in an infinite array has formed the basic of the construction process. The individual bubbles will be incorporated into a plastic film and tailored like sewing pattern. This will bring them to life.
